Our research investigates the economic impacts of plastic waste on coastal communities and key industries in Viet Nam, such as fisheries, aquaculture, and tourism. These sectors support livelihoods, generate income and food, and create export revenue. All of them also depend on plastic in one form or another.

Fishing nets, pond liners, aquaculture feed bags, produce containers, and packaging, are some examples in which plastic is the main or a key component. However, plastic waste resulting from its various uses, loss, or discarding directly into the environment can also impact these businesses – for example, plastic that clogs fishing nets, blocks inflows to aquaculture ponds, spoiling the appearance of tourist beaches.

Moreover, larger plastics and microplastics could carry pollutants or disease organisms that may harm aquaculture or human health. Through a range of scientific methods and community engagement techniques we explore people’s perceptions and experiences with plastic to understand its day-to-day impacts on their businesses and livelihoods.

Plastics in the coastal and marine systems can impact business operations and society either directly or indirectly. Direct interference would include plastic waste entanglements into boat propellers or fishing nets. These can cause serious accidents or injury, prevent safe travel and operations on the vessel, or reduce the capture efficiency of the nets and incur time for cleaning and repairing the equipment.

In the aquaculture industry, plastics can block water inlets, clog nets of marine cages thereby impeding water flow, and act as a vector of pathogens or other contaminants. Plastic makes beaches unsightly and could limit or damage the growth in tourism markets and presents a health risk to tourists and coastal communities.

Indirect business involves issues associated with reputation and perceptions of product safety. For example, irrespective of the potential risk (none, low, high), harm from ingesting microplastics in aquaculture or from wild capture products, the mere perception that products originating from Viet Nam could contain higher levels of microplastics due to the association with the environment could damage consumer perceptions and hence markets for such products.

Our research group works directly with Vietnamese aquaculture farmers, fishermen, and tourism providers to understand and communicate how plastic impacts their lives and businesses. We link these coastal communities with national and international NGOs and business partners to co-create solutions to the plastic challenge and ensure better productivity and safer operations for these sectors.

Learn about activities

Through interviews and focus group discussions with coastal communities and businesses, we can understand how and why people use plastic, what happens to it after its useful life, and how plastic impacts their businesses and livelihoods. We also conduct questionnaire surveys to understand the economic effects of plastic on these businesses.

Later in the project, we hope to get insights from these communities about ways to solve the plastic issues and reduce any negative impacts it may have on health, livelihoods, and the environment.

Coastal communities and businesses like fisheries, aquacultures, and tourism depend on the ocean for their livelihoods. Their activities can be one of the sources of ocean plastic pollution that comes back and negatively impacts their lives and businesses. Once the communities recognise that they are part of their local plastic problem, they are more likely to be part of the solution.

The ownership, ingenuity, and practicality of the solutions for the impact of plastic waste on their own businesses are the most sustainable solution for this global challenge.

Our research is organised in five interlinked thematic areas.

Pathways

Quantifying and modelling the flow of plastics into the coastal environment and the factors that affect this flow, uptake by aquatic organisms, and deposition to the sea floor.

Health

Identifying key plastic types and size classes associated with contaminants of potential concern and pathogens of risk to ecosystem and human health.

Policy

Undertaking policy analyses highlighting where effective interventions to mitigate the causes and effects of plastic pollution will have the most effect.

Community

Working with Vietnamese coastal communities, businesses, governmental and non-governmental organisations, business partners in the UK and international NGOs, to increase awareness about the plastics challenge and co-design effective solutions to reduce its impacts on society.

Chính bởi vậy, bảo tồn nền đa dạng sinh học càng trở nên cần thiết hơn bao giờ hết.
