Community - 3SIP2C

Plastic is part of our everyday life, in many forms, from plastic bags or bottles to pharmaceuticals and storage containers, to name a few. We are all alerted and concerned about the environmental impact plastic waste can have, in households, cities, rivers, coastlines and the global ocean.

We also realise the large and devastating impact of floating plastic on aquatic life, especially along coastlines and in the ocean. On land, poor waste management too often results in uncontrolled dumping or burning of plastic and other waste, triggering a cascade of pollution in the air and water, negatively affecting human health.

This situation rapidly worsens, in local hotspots where plastic management is less controlled, calling for joined-up action to minimise plastic use and feed any remaining plastics back into the circular economy.

What we know less about is the source, pathways, interactions and timings of plastic movement through the landscape from land to ocean, nor where it ultimately ends up. This flow is greatly affected by human activities, especially in the cities and in areas with large commercial activities.

We know even less about the plastic in the environment we cannot see – the so-called microplastics – and their distribution and impact on natural ecosystems and human health.

Our research group relays new observations from the science activities about the sources, pathways, and sinks of plastic to the communities and stakeholders in Viet Nam, to spark and enhance the discussion about practical solutions. We utilise social and global media to share this evolving discussion and to attract regional and international partners to join the dialogue.

We anticipate that the regular flow of new knowledge and reflection will gradually transform the mindset of people and change perceptions, behaviour and governance of coastal and marine plastic pollution.

In the project, we closely work with coastal communities, who are the most affected by the plastic waste. Until now, we have not yet known exactly where the plastics debris comes from, what mechanisms led to its deposition in certain places, and what the impacts are to the environment and local livelihoods. For that we must work closely with local communities to understand their problems and work together with them to co-create ways to solve the plastic issue.”

So, in our research, we try to create opportunities for various stakeholders to share their experiences and learn to see the impacts of plastics from each other’s point of view.”

Our activities are aimed at a varied audience of stakeholders. We hold workshops and training sessions for local coastal aquaculture farmers, tourism providers, students, and teachers. We work with governmental and non-governmental organizations and local grassroots groups to organise engagement and education activities, beach clean-ups, and competitions that boost efforts to solve the plastic problem.

We implement environmental education programs in the schools and communities we work with to incorporate actions for ‘Less-Plastic’. Within this process, we all learn and help build each other’s capacity to tackle the plastic challenge.

The ways to solve the plastic challenge are by nature diverse. If combined, they can become valuable components of a complex but efficient ‘solution system’.

Our research targets practical ideas driven by local community members, schools, or NGOs; improved governance structures that better connect local and national governmental organisations; testing and implementation of best practices for aquaculture and fishing markets and international seafood trade; validating the role and consequences of microplastics; and finally training of a new cohort of academic experts in Viet Nam that are capable to target the complex nature of the challenge.

Our research is organised in five interlinked thematic areas.

Pathways

Quantifying and modelling the flow of plastics into the coastal environment and the factors that affect this flow, uptake by aquatic organisms, and deposition to the sea floor.

Business

Explore how plastics impact the lives of coastal communities and business activities such as aquaculture, fisheries, and tourism.

Health

Identifying key plastic types and size classes associated with contaminants of potential concern and pathogens of risk to ecosystem and human health.

Policy

Undertaking policy analyses highlighting where effective interventions to mitigate the causes and effects of plastic pollution will have the most effect.

Phát biểu tại hội thảo "từ ô nhiễm nhựa đến sức khỏe cộng đồng: Mối liên hệ giữa vi nhựa và kháng kháng sinh" tại trường đại học Phenikaa Ngày hôm nay, 3 chuyên gia của 3SIP2C, TS. Ngô Thị Thúy Hường, TS. Nguyễn Thị Hạnh Tiên, và TS. Lê Thanh Thảo đã có phát biểu tại hội thảo "từ ô nhiễm nhựa đến sức khỏe cộng đồng: Mối liên hệ giữa vi nhựa và kháng kháng sinh" Trong buổi hội thảo, các chuyên gia đã nhấn mạnh mối nguy mà vi nhựa có thể mang lại cho đời sống con người. Các chuyên gia cho rằng vi nhựa có thể đi vào cơ thể con người thông qua con đường ăn uống, khi các loài sinh vật như tôm, cua, cá ăn phải vi nhựa. Ngoài ra, vi nhựa còn có thể trở thành nơi trú ngụ của vi khuẩn và các chất độc hại cũng như kháng sinh tồn dư, tạo ra cơ hội cho các loài vi khuẩn có khả năng kháng kháng sinh.
