Policy - 3SIP2C

Our research work is all about how we can help decision-makers (such as politicians, industry leaders, community groups, and individuals) make informed decisions about the production, use, and management of plastic – particularly once we are finished with it.

In order to do this, we need to make sure we have the right policies (rules) in place and that people want to follow them. Through agreements with businesses, the government and others involved in making, using, and getting rid of plastic, we can look out for any gaps that exist, how best to fill them, and how to help people follow the rules.

Viet Nam is already a leader in trying to stop the plastic we use from reaching the ocean, but the only way to truly prevent this is by following existing laws, bringing new ones where needed, and making sure each of us does what we can to reduce, reuse and recycle our plastic.

We use the information created in other work components from this project to help decision-makers understand the problem, and what solutions may look like.

In particular we examine how to:

– Reduce our plastic production which relies on fossil fuel

– Reduce how much plastic we use every day, especially ‘cheap’ (single-use) plastics

– Increase how much multi-use plastic is reused and recycled

We do this by examining existing laws to see if they are both strong enough and provide the right incentives for businesses and individuals so that national targets can be reached. We will also look at what barriers might exist to meeting these targets and how to overcome them.

Next, we bring together businesses, community groups and policymakers to work together in partnership. This is the best way to overcome any barriers. It will also help creativity and innovation while reducing costs and increasing the number of people who want to see plastic waste reduced.

And finally, we will help Viet Nam become a world leader in addressing this challenge through a Knowledge Exchange Hub, within our Less-Plastic Network, that will strengthen the science around plastics and show what Viet Nam is achieving. This will help other countries to do the same, and that way we spark global change.

We are analysing current policies around the production, consumption, and waste management of plastic in Viet Nam to help overcome any existing barriers. We are hosting Roundtables where key partnerships between businesses, citizens, and policy-makers can be made.

This helps bring creative solutions and policies to drive change. We are also establishing a Knowledge Exchange Hub to strengthen the links between science and policies, help promote the spread of best practices, and improve cooperation with global partners. Why not get involved?

It is very easy to see that there are differences between people about how they see plastic. Some people need a lot of plastic (like businesses) while others don’t need so much. But there is a lot we can ALL do.

For example, using cloth bags at the supermarket helps reduce the use of plastic bags. Or we could avoid the use of cheap, single-used plastic but feed high quality plastic waste back into the recycling lane.

Pathways

Quantifying and modelling the flow of plastics into the coastal environment and the factors that affect this flow, uptake by aquatic organisms, and deposition to the sea floor.

Business

Explore how plastics impact the lives of coastal communities and business activities such as aquaculture, fisheries, and tourism.

Health

Identifying key plastic types and size classes associated with contaminants of potential concern and pathogens of risk to ecosystem and human health.

Community

Working with Vietnamese coastal communities, businesses, governmental and non-governmental organisations, business partners in the UK and international NGOs, to increase awareness about the plastics challenge and co-design effective solutions to reduce its impacts on society.

Chính bởi vậy, bảo tồn nền đa dạng sinh học càng trở nên cần thiết hơn bao giờ hết.
