Our Research

The 3SIP2C project investigates the sources, pathways, and destinations of plastics in coastal Viet Nam. Our research team works across five interlinked thematic areas to address the plastic challenge from multiple angles. We collaborate and apply various natural and social science methods and techniques to understand the extent of plastics’ distribution and impact on the marine environment, human and animal health, and coastal communities and businesses.

Pathways

Quantifying and modelling the flow of plastics into the coastal environment and the factors that affect this flow, uptake by aquatic organisms, and deposition to the sea floor.

Business

Explore how plastics impact the lives of coastal communities and business activities such as aquaculture, fisheries, and tourism.

Health

Identifying key plastic types and size classes associated with contaminants of potential concern and pathogens of risk to ecosystem and human health.

Policy

Undertaking policy analyses highlighting where effective interventions to mitigate the causes and effects of plastic pollution will have the most effect.

Community

Working with Vietnamese coastal communities, businesses, governmental and non-governmental organisations, business partners in the UK and international NGOs, to increase awareness about the plastics challenge and co-design effective solutions to reduce its impacts on society.
